When it Rains, it Pours
After a destructive rainstorm damaged the majority of my artwork, I am raising funds to help produce new work that will be featured in two solo exhibition opportunities at prestigious galleries in Chicago.
About This Project
I recently had a terrible leak in my studio. The water damaged seventy percent of my paintings. I was devastated by the damage. One week after, I received invitations to mount two solo shows in Chicago for 2012. The first is at the Hyde Park Art Center and the other at Hinge Gallery. And as they say, when it rains it pours...a week later I received a third invitation to mount a solo show in 2012 at Western Exhibitions Gallery in Chicago.
I work in narrative form and have a heavy Chicago Imagist influence. I mainly work in painting and drawing with a combination of collage. My work deals with relationships, both personal and cultural. I am interested in popular culture along with subcultures, race, and religion. I combine all of these things but reframe to give a resolve. I use craft materials to add another element to my work. I believe these materials come with a meaning already, and to use them and not have them take over my intended message.
I would like to challenge myself with these upcoming shows by making larger canvas paintings. After seeing my smaller paintings damaged it made me want to push harder. I need to purchase large shaped stretchers, paint, canvas, felt, and dye for the upcoming shows. Your backing will help me purchase these supplies, and I have various limited edition prints, drawings, and paintings offered as a thank you for your support.
