I’ve been selected to attend a 12-week residency program this summer at a ceramic center in the Netherlands and couldn’t be more thrilled. The medium of clay, with its impressionable surface, has recently allowed me to expand on my interest in the fragile temporality of life as manifested through the natural world. Working alongside ceramic experts and peers during my stay is not only the perfect environment to explore clay’s endless possibilities but an excellent space to build out a new body of work called Vestiges of Time. With your support I hope to raise funds that will cover the residency participation fees, along with materials, production, and travel costs.

About This Project

For me, the process of discovery is why I love to make art and having the unique opportunity to spend three months on this project is invaluable. I feel honored to have been accepted into the Artist-in-Residence program at the European Ceramic Workcentre (EKWC) in Oisterwijk, Netherlands this summer. For more than 50 years, international artists have developed their practices in clay there, resulting in new bodies of work and creative innovations. As a resident I’ll have access to exceptional facilities, a cohort of peers, and onsite technical staff that will help me push the boundaries of scale and process. 

For my application proposal to EKWC, I made tests by pressing weeds onto the surface of clay vessels. The results were impressions that evoke vestiges of time which connect to my ongoing exploration using nature as a vehicle for depicting transience, change, and ways of preserving memories.

During my time at EKWC, my goal is to memorialize the local natural environment and subsequently use this knowledge for future projects with native plants found in Chicago. Native plants that were indigenous to Chicago prior to European settlement are often recognized as “weeds,” when in fact they are beautiful specimens and well adapted to the local soil and climate.

While in The Netherlands, I will gather and research native plants in nearby areas. I will experiment with pressing these materials onto clay surfaces and applying glazes mixed from natural pigments to further connect ceramics to my current painting practice. Sourced directly from the earth, clay is an appropriate material for me to explore. I welcome the challenge of ceramics and am looking forward to bringing the new work made at the residency back to Chicago to expand on and share with the community.

This project will enable me to broaden what I can do as an artist. Being amongst other practitioners will inevitably result in discussion and engagement, fueling the project and myself to grow.   Update 2: Project Update

  Dear all,

  I've just completed the residency where I developed the work for Vestiges of Time. I can't thank you enough for your generous support in making the project happen. 

  The 12 weeks at the European Ceramic Workcentre was both intense and transformative. I was constantly amazed by what can happen in the ceramics process and it will likely become a medium I continue to use. As planned, I collected local flora to make impressions in clay which followed by experiments in glazing and staining. I'm thrilled with the results and look forward to sending the rewards later this fall.

  Update 3: Solo Show opening 1/14

  Greetings and Happy New Year!

  You likely recieved my latest newsletter including information about the upcoming solo exhibition, "Beneath the Green", at Goldfinch.
  The show is scheduled to run from January 14 to February 24, featuring the ceramics created during my residency at EKWC last summer.
  Opening reception is Sunday, 1/14 from 2-5PM.
