Trust in Life

With a community of movers and thinkers, we’re creating a Spring performance called Trust in Life that puts trust at center court as a way of envisioning self-realization and collective healing. Guided by play and improvisational training, this piece will invite audiences to witness connection within ourselves and one another.

About This Project

As a dancer, I know that movement is a huge part of self-reflection work. As a Black woman, I see in my community the legacies of endurance and cruelty that have been passed down for generations, creating a rigid and often limiting knowledge of ourselves. I began reflecting on why we can’t gain a better understanding of each other. I believe it comes down to trust—in ourselves, in one another, and in our wider community.

A year ago I created Eternal Resolve, an initiative of dancers and non-dancers who work together to achieve self-realization and healing through movement.  In November 2021, we assembled the first "Resolve Think Tank," a supportive exchange between pairs of dancers and non-dancers who use movement, writing, and dialogue to build self-awareness and trust in one another. We grounded our work with a sense of play, guided by inner discovery and improvisational training.

As this learning materialized over the past months, the dancers began developing a series of performances, or what we call “plays,” not unlike the moves a team uses in a sports game. In this instance, instead of winning a competition, we’re working to resolve something for ourselves and build unity together, with the other movers providing support and collective energy to drive the piece forward.  

Our work will culminate in a two-night performance on March 11 and 12 at the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, as part of Bebe Miller’s SoloDuo Dance Project. As director, I’m developing and guiding this performance with our Eternal Resolve Think Tank members and dance collective. In order to fully realize this performance, we are seeking support from our community to help cover critical costs, including performer and musician fees, costumes, lighting, and other production expenses.
