Bread & Butter
This collaborative venture aims to produce a weekend of live dance performance examining the sustainability of the Chicago arts community.
About This Project
Bread & Butter, a collaborative venture between choreographer Cristina Tadeo and Chicago musician Nicholas Davio, explores artistic labor, worth and the perceived value of art as commodity and community. This ongoing performance project and community forum seeks to empower independent artists to advocate for the sustainability of our artistic community. The work is designed to spark conversation between artists and members of the community who consume art, including other artists, funders, viewers and other professionals who hire artists. This project has developed though a series of conversations and inquiries, including:
How do individual artists define the worth of their work monetarily and otherwise?
How are they willing to adapt or change to make a living as an artist?
How has the accessibility and mass consumption of popular technology affected the individual artist?
How do consumers of art (including other artists) value the labor and presentation of artistic work?
The performance features six dancers, sound design, and a gallery-style installation of vintage tape recorders that utilize past technology to investigate current issues in art. Recorded interviews are played back and manipulated throughout the performance in real time from analogue audio cassettes. The interviews are mixed with original sound design, bringing all of the voices in the same room and creating a soundscape for the live performance.
With the support of a 2013 Individual Artist Program Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, a small-scale version of this project was presented at Comfort Station Logan Square in August 2013. The work has sparked much conversation among participants and viewers, encouraging its continued development. This initial research period and set of performances have served as a strong foundation for a much larger version of the project that will premiere in fall 2014.
Your support will help us engage far more contributing artists, reach a larger audience, present the project in a larger venue and ensure each of the employed artists are compensated with an hourly wage for their time and talents.
Thank you in advance for your support!
