Beatitudes is a collaborative ‘happening’ and choreopoem that explores the Beat Generation of the 1950-60's and its evolution into modern-day. As a modern-day beatnik, I am moved by the message of unity and unconditional love that the movement lives by. With this project I want to show people how a modern Beat would be tapped into current affairs and seek new ways to create a better world. In this time of high contrast, this work hits hard because its focus is to show how we are all connected and how we are in a symbiotic relationship with the world at large. Together with a team of performance collaborators, we will create a space that will be open and welcome to all, a space that allows people to work through their personal contrasting issues with grace and ease. With your support, this work will manifest as kinetic sharing in the late spring to mid summer of 2021.

About This Project

I first became inspired by the Beat Generation after watching the 1957 film Funny Face starring Audrey Hepburn. Embedded in this film is a message of empathicalism, compassion, and understanding of the various influences that shape the reality we each personally perceive. After working through a string of ideas, I kept wanting to develop a piece that depicts what the modern day "beatnik" looks like.

Through dramaturgical research, I hope to integrate poetry, performative text, fashion, and other signature Beat elements to capture the mood and the aesthetic of this iconic literary and arts moment. I also aim to explore the ways in which the Beats rejected societal standards, engaged with Eastern Philosophy and Religion, and were precursors to the sexual revolution of the 1960s and the Black Arts Movement.

With Beatitudes, I look to cultivate a blissful landscape of kinetic linguistics influenced by sonic stimulation. This will be brought to life with 6 to 8 dancers/movement artists, flutist Kedgrick Pullums and sound engineer Juan Grizales, with dramaturgy by J'Sun Howard. This will be an immersive experience that encourages and softly pushes people to participate and be active the sharing space. Thank you for helping me bring this project to life in 2021.
