3 Singers is a performance and multimedia installation combining live and recorded music, movement, video, and technology in order to raise awareness and expand knowledge about issues faced by female laborers in the global textile industry.

About This Project

It doesn’t end here!  You can still make an impact!

The creative team of 3 Singers is honored to be the inaugural commission at the newly built headquarters for the Tadeusz Kantor museum at the Crickoteca Center in Krakow, Poland. 3 Singers will premiere in Poland November 6th-8th, 2014.

Our next fundraising goal is to raise $5,000 towards airfare and shipping costs to Poland.  In addition to seven performers and designers, we must transport three vintage singer sewing machines, 90 feet of metal piping, and over 270 feet of fabric screens to Eastern Europe.  Please donate to 3 Singers and help us make it to our international premiere in Poland!

3 Singers is an innovative performance and multi-media installation combining live and recorded music, movement, video, and technology in order to raise awareness and expand knowledge about issues faced by female laborers in the global textile industry. 3 Singers explores women's roles as laborers and organizers for workers’ rights in the textile industry through three different periods of global history: pre-Civil War agricultural production, the Industrial Revolution, and the contemporary "sweatshop."

Performers and audience members are cocooned within a cloth structure, creating an immersive sound and visual environment of baroque arias, warped birdsong, and the buzzing of vintage Singer sewing machines as the vocalists modify and manipulate their own voices and movements through Xbox Kinnect cameras.

The 3 Singers creative team is so excited and grateful to have achieved our first fundraising goal to support the installation of a month-long exhibition of dramaturgical research, as well as final development and distribution of an interactive smartphone application.  These generous donations will help to pay a museum exhibition coordinator who will assist in selecting the most compelling content for the 19 video screens in the exhibition space and will help pay a programmer who will cultivate the interactivity of information from the exhibition in the smartphone app.

Donate before September 27th, your contribution is tax deductible through 3Arts!

Project Narrative

The Chicago premier of 3 Singers in January 2015 will feature a month-long exhibition of the dramaturgical research for the project through a special partnership with the National Museum of Health and Medicine.  This exhibition will highlight in-depth key concepts addressed in the live performance and provide audiences access to historical imagery, first person narratives, and contemporary activist organizations. It will be free and open to the public for an additional three weeks after the performances.  During this time, museum patrons may attend panel discussions and other events that highlight various aspects of feminist labor organization, new economic models, and organization across borders through new technologies.

The exhibition will live on in the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago archives of exhibitions. These archives are accessible to the public at any time, both online and through on onsite database.

Audiences can further engage with 3 Singers through a smartphone application developed specifically for the multi-media installation at the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago.  Not only will this smartphone app further our potential audience reach, it also highlights our interest in bridging the physical and virtual body.  This app will provide access to those who attend the exhibition as well as those who are unable to attend to multiple articles, legislative information, archival imagery, current production video, and organizations addressing female textile laborers.
