Sarah Gottlieb

Sarah Gottlieb is a Chicago-based dancer and choreographer whose work is grounded in improvisation, feminism, and her penchant for metaphysical inquiry.  Sarah is the Artistic Director of BodyCompass Dance Project whose experimental dance-making methods yield captivating, politically motivated performance. After several years of formative world travel, Sarah graduated in 2013 from DePaul University with a self-designed major entitled "Conscious Studies of the Body and Movement."  She has dedicated significant time to her study of Nana Shineflug's The Conscious Body, which highlights the chi-system (energy) as the foundation to contemporary dance training.  In 2014, Sarah became certified as a Laban Movement Analyst, (CLMA).  Her movement pedagogy is highly shaped by these two influences.  An avid Contact Improviser, Sarah regularly facilitates the Chicago Contact Improv Jam and teaches nationally.  For the last two years she has been the Artistic Director of the oldest Midwest regional Contact Improv gathering, GLACIER.  In 2015, she was awarded the Creative Time Sponsorship Residency at Links Hall, which enabled her to make Yolk, a full-length work that is now touring throughout the U.S. and abroad.  Sarah has danced with many Chicago artists, most recently performing in works by Victoria Eleanor Bradford, Megan Rhyme, ChihHsien Lin, Jessie Marasa, and Jason Torres Hancock, and she continues to generate interdisciplinary collaborations through her own productions.
