Larry Lee grew up in Chinatown and Andersonville before moving to South Carolina. In 1980, he returned to Chicago, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago and his Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. An artist whose practice includes sculpture, video, installation, and painting, as well as his curatorial project, Molar Productions, Lee "remakes" his personal history and the Asian American experience in general into stylized multimedia objects and images he facetiously terms "orientalia". In Chicago his work has been exhibited at the Chicago Cultural Center, Gallery 400, and Evanston Arts Center, as well as shown in New York City, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston, Cleveland and Glasgow, Scotland. In addition to being the curator for the Foundation for Asian American Independent Media, Lee currently works as an administrator in admissions and faculty for the Contemporary Practices and Art History, Theory and Criticism departments at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
